Description: ULTRA RARE AS FIRST EDITION. Anonymous, although recent reprints (2000s) have identified the author as Francis Renshaw. There is also an online scan of the original book with "by Francis Renshaw" identified as author in handwritten pencil or ink on title page. I can't find anything about this author, and Worldcat has the 1882 entry but without an author identified. It could be this very online scanned version which has allowed recent reprint publishers to identify this author. In any case, published in 1882 by Cushings and Bailey of Baltimore. Generally, I cannot find any background or information about this epic poem. The "Note" opposite copyright page may give a clue or two: "The writer, sojourning and sketching in a fairy valley and its environs, and having a suit with one Prince Ringdove, chances to read a beautiful old legend-like tale,* which enables him to win, and is embodied, with some new imagery, to give it the form of an epic, in the following stanzas. *Baron von Humboldt's personal narrative." Green cloth boards, gilt front cover design, rubbed but clear gilt title and design on spine. Light to moderate edge and corner wear, corners lightly bumped, darkened page tops. Solidly bound, brown endpapers, no markings in 238 clean and solidly bound pages. B120
