Description: Founded in 1850. This type of advertising depicts sad children and toddlers, and Firemen fighting flames. ≈6X5 in. In fairly good cond. Item 483631 ◊ c.1880s Chromolithographic Trade Card From Continental Insurance Co. Of New York Very rare and fascinating "c.1880s Chromolithographic Advertising From Continental Insurance Co. of New York." This is an extraordinary Advertising or "Trade Card," which measures approx. 6-1/4" by 4-3/4" (16 cm. X 12.2. cm.) The Continental Insurance Co. of New York opened for business in the 1850s. This card is a type of advertising card for the company. It was created in about the 1880's… when these Chromolithographic cards were so popular. The chromolithography in the card required a lot of workmanship, and that is what made it valuable and collectible. We're not exactly sure how it was used. Some people think that these type of cards were the top of a calendar, hence the round circle at the, for hanging it on a wall. However there is no evidence on this particular card, that anything was attached to the bottom of it. It is very artistic though, depicting many sad and ash-covered children and toddlers, one man taking shelter in a barrel, and some of the children hiding under a "life-sized" insurance policy. Up above them are buildings and raging fires, and 1880's Firemen, working to put out the flames. The artist worked very hard to make the children look pitiful. (Also fire insurance wasn't the only type of insurance they provided.) This card is in fairly good condition, considering its age … with some "bumping" of the corners and edges, including some small creases.. The back is clean and there is no evidence it was stored in a scrapbook. There is no discoloration, nor glue residue. This card is wonderfully unique and colorful, once again challenging our perception, that the world in the 1800's was just monochrome or sepia.
