Description: Hard to find single issue of the Academy (London) for 25 January 1879 is complete and in good condition, deftly rescued by me from an old damaged bound volume. 19 pages. A few highlights I find include: The energetic writer, researcher, reader and critic George Saintsbury pens a longer review of Llywelyn Morgan's play Brian Boru. On the adventures of the 10th Century Irish King, a volume that is today nearly impossible to find in a first edition, here published by Longmans. Flora Masson reviews three new novels including Rachel Olliver's three volume Rachel Olliver, a Tale. A full column and 1/2 obituary of the notable, and much underrated, Scottish author, newspaper writer (on the staff of the London Times) and all around literary man Eaneas Sweetland Dallas at an early age. Some of his obituary copy produced for The Times detailing the passing of major Victorian personalities of the century's middle years are models of their kind. Another longer obituary of the English painter E.M. Ward, R.A. Moy Thomas on the so-called "Elegy on Burbage" and the mischief acted upon it by the professional literary forger John Payne Collier. R. Tucker offers an essay in review of one of the notable pioneering mathematician and philosopher W.K. Clifford's primary works, Elements of Dynamic: an Introduction to the Study of Motion and Rest in Solid and Fluid Bodies. Clifford died, at age 33, a little over a month after the appearance of this review.
