She published under a male name to escape the preconceived ideas about women's fiction during the era, becoming one of the best known Victorian writers. Many believe that her novel 'Middlemarch' is the greatest novel in the English Language. Eliot is best remembered today in particular for her novel 'Middlemarch', a novel following two sisters, Dorothea and Celia Brooke, and the lives of those residing in Middlemarch, a fictitious Midlands town. The novel sees Dorothea's marriage to an older gentleman, and examines how the marriage affects her, and those around her. This novel is generally considered to be one of the best pieces of English literature ever published. She also published the incredibly popular novel 'The Mill on the Floss', also included in this set, which follows the lives of siblings Maggie and Tom Tulliver over a period of about ten to fifteen years. The siblings live at Dorlcote Mill on the River Floss. The main focus of the novel is the relationship between the two siblings, and also with the relationships - both platonic and romantic - of the protagonist, Maggie. This set contains:'Middlemarch', complete in three volumes.'Adam Bede', complete in two volumes.'Daniel Deronda', complete in three volumes.'Romola', complete in two volumes.'The Mill on the Floss', complete in two volumes.'Scenes of a Clerical Life', complete in two volumes.'Felix Holt', complete in two volumes.'Silas Marner', complete in one volumes.'The Spanish Gypsy', complete in one volume.'The Legend of Jubal', complete in one volume.Bookplate of Arthur Mackintosh Balfour to the front paste downs.
