New York: Buffalo Bill, whose legend refuses to die, is, in a sense, riding high again. "Buffalo Bill and the Wild West," a big show of memorabilia, posters, paintings and sculpture relating to Colonel William F. Cody - as he was formally known - is at The Brooklyn Museum, running through January 17th. Included in the show is this photo of Buffalo Bill, circa 1877, in a black velvet Mexican suit. With the Fifth Cavalry in Eastern Wyoming, shortly after Custer's defeat at the Little Big Horn in 1876, he wore his black velvet Mexican stage costume. He led a surprise attack on Cheyennes in which Indian leader Yellow Hand was killed. Returning to the East with a melodrama about the battle, he let it be known that he was wearing the very same clothes onstage that he had worn in the fight.Photo measures 8 x 10inches.
