Description: THE BALTIMORE GUN CLUB Written by Jules Verne and translated by Edward Roth. Published by the King & Baird, Publishers, Philadelphia. Copyright by Edward Roth, 1874. This book is an adaptation of From The Earth To The Moon that was translated by Edward Roth. It is a reprint of Scribner’s The American Gun Club and likely appeared in late 1874 or 1875. It constitutes the first half of Verne’s seminal science fiction moon odyssey. Roth also published an unauthorized translation of the second part of Verne's Moon voyage as All Around The Moon in 1876. The book has 13 illustration plates, as called for, by Bayard, de Montaut and de Neuville. Six of the illustrations are facsimiles that have been carefully bound back into the book. I have restored many old books like this one and have received many compliments from their buyers over the years. Never a negative comment or return, but I do guarantee satisfaction. This is a very rare copy of a book that is one of the seminal works of science fiction. Written by Jules Verne in 1865, tells the story of the Baltimore Gun Club, a post-American Civil War society of weapons enthusiasts, and their attempts to build an enormous Columbiad space gun and launch three people — the Gun Club's president, his Philadelphian armor-making rival, and a French poet — in a projectile with the goal of a Moon landing. Five years later, Verne wrote a sequel called Around the Moon. The book first appeared in America in 1869 in wraps or paperback form and published by the Newark Printing and Publishing Co. There is ONLY ONE COPY known—in the Library of Congress. Sampson, Low, Marston, in London, published the first English Edition in 1873, followed by the Scribner, Armstrong edition (fully illustrated with both volumes combined), in 1874.Edward Roth 1826-1911)was born in England and moved to the US around 1845. A teacher and translator, his four translations of novels by Jules Verne are generally thought to have been the worst of a very mixed lot, but have survived in reprint form well into the twentieth-century. It is interesting that he copyrighted his own translation and published it himself. DESCRIPTION: 7 5/8 x 5 inches---442 pages Early Edition Hardcover CONDITION: This book is in very good condition with restoration. The original cloth cover shows some staining on the rear board, but has bright gilt on the front board. The spine has discoloration most likely from the removal sometime in the past of library numbers or labels. The spine and joints were strong and rebacking was not necessary. The spine ends have been repaired. Unfortunately the book was found with the frontispiece and five other illustrations missing (p96, 276, 364,377, and 440). All missing illustrations were laser printed on acid free paper and bound into the book during the rebinding process. The front and rear endpapers are original, but there is new paper reinforcing the hinges. The book had once been in a church library many years ago and there was some rough treatment of the rear endpapers when a former owner removed all the label, card pocket, etc. This has been cleaned up and touched up with similar color. The textblock is overall clean—the interior having no names, major marks, but there are some initials and a number in old ink at the top of the second blank page. The paper shows average toning for a book this old. Thanks to the addition of the missing illustrations, all pages and illustrations are present. The textblock has been rebound into the cover using new cords and strong cloth spine reinforcing. Authentic and archival materials have been used throughout--non acidic glues and pastes, nonacidic Japanese papers for reinforcing, etc. BECAUSE MEDIA RATE SHIPPING IS FREE ON THE BOOKS I SELL, COMBINE THIS WITH OTHER ITEMS FROM MY EBAY STORE.
