Sir Edmund Beckett, 1st Baron Grimthorpe, (1816-1905) also known as Edmund Beckett Denison, was an English lawyer, mechanician, controversialist, horologist and architect. In 1851 he designed the mechanism for the clock of the Palace of Westminster, responsible for the chimes of Big Ben. The Contents of this book include chapters on the Earth; Sun; Moon; Planets; Laws of planetary motion, and Telescopes. There is a fold-out Table of Elements of the Solar System Adapted to Sun's Equatorial Parallax of 8" 943. at the back of the book and there are several in-text b/w illustrations.Brown cloth boards with gilt lettering and a gilt illustration of a lamp set within a decorative black circular design on the front board. Minor marks on the boards. Gilt lettering on the spine with a little wear at the top and bottom. Tan endpapers. Light foxing to title page and pages.
