Samuel Manning was a clergyman who, like many of his contemporaries, acquired his great knowledge of the Holy Land entirely from a study of the Bible. In 1873, however, he travelled to the Holy Land to "compare the Land and the Book". This work is the result of his researches. An account of a journey through Southern Palestine or Judea in 1873, designed to illustrate the histories of the Scriptures. Hard cover with original bright red cloth and gold gilt lettering and design on front cover and spine. Gilt edges. 224 pages. Beautifully illustrated. Illustrated with maps and numerous pen & pencil drawings. 8 pages of Publisher's Illustrated List at back. The charming illustrations are wood-engravings and photoxylographs (wood engravings from photographs); the original pen-and-pencil drawings are reproduced here in Gillotage, a method of printing from etched metal relief block. Profusely illustrated throughout with numerous engravings, many of which are full-page plates printed on side one of the leaf only; engraved vignettes; head- and tail-pieces; several (full-page) maps and plans; engraved elaborate first initial.
