From 1860 to 1870, the population had more than doubled to over 33,000. As rebuilding efforts were underway, construction jobs were booming, and many displaced southerners flocked to the city eager for work. This boom made Atlanta the cultural, industrial, and economic center for the American South. The following decade would see the establishment of numerous Universities and colleges which would go on to become some of the oldest in the South. Bird’s eye perspectives were among the most popular illustration produced in the late nineteenth century through the 1920s. They were used as promotional tools for cities throughout the nation to attract workers and businesses.
