Description: Stereoview photograph (oversized, cabinet) of a man seated at the base of a mammoth tree at Calaveras Grove in Calaveras County, California, published by James Cremer of Philadelphia, circa 1870s to 1880s. This may be a copy view. The view, from the series American Scenery and identified in ink on the reverse as “2454, Pride of the Forest, 45 ft. in Circumfrence, shows a young man seated at the base of a Giant Sequoia tree. He is dressed in shirtsleeves, wears a hat, and has his pants tucked into his boots—perhaps a local guide. The Pride of the Forest was one of the mammoth trees in the Calaveras Grove. The stereoview is in good or better condition with light wear and soiling. Note the light rubbing at the corners, as well as the bit of discoloration at both edges. The photographs exhibit good to very good tonal range and show good to very good detail. A nice early Calaveras County, California, image!
