Description: Stereoview photograph (small cabinet size) of a Civil War monument and buildings in Worcester, Massachusetts, by George C. Holden of Worcester, dated 1874. The view, identified on the front as “Worcester Soldiers’ Monument, Dedicated July 15, 1874, shows a tall monument with sculptures set in a park with large commercial buildings behind it. Signs on the building behind it at right read C.C. Houghton, Boot Factory, and Kalamazoo Flour Store. This monument was designed by Randolph Rogers and built by James G. Batterson and the New England Granite Works (likely with granite from Westerly, Rhode Island). It still stands on Worcester Common, though most of the buildings behind it were long ago replaced. George C. Holden was a bookseller in Worcester and probably just the publisher of this stereoview—his name is not in the NSA Treadwell-Darrah list of photographers. The stereoview is in good or better condition with light wear and soiling. Note the rubbing and bumping at the corners. The photographs exhibit good tonal range, just a tad light, and show good or better detail. A very nice Worcester MA and Civil War monument image!
