Description: A set of two important post-Civil War pamphlets on Black Americans, each rare in its own right, and each remarkable for the subject being debated: Are Black people human? In 1867, two years after the Civil War, the structure of modern structural racism was being constructed and here are two seminal artifacts from that time: "The Negro: What Is His Ethnological Status?" by Ariel; and "The Negro: A Reply to Ariel" by Robert A. Young, D.D. "Ethnological Status" argues that God created white and black people separately and differently, and that only white people have souls. Biblically speaking, white people are the sons of God, while Black people are the sons of man. It is a perfect example of the claimed white supremacy that grew during reconstruction. "A Reply" covers the response neatly on the cover: "The negro belongs to the genus Homo. -- He is a descendant of Adam and Eve. -- He is the offspring of Ham. -- He is not a beast, but a human being. -- He has an immortal soul. -- He may be civilized, enlightened, and converted to Christianity." "Ethnological Status" was privately published in Cincinnati in 1867 and is about 5" x 8" with 48 pages. "A Reply" was published by J. W. M'Ferrin & Co in Nashville in 1867. It is larger, about 5 1/2" x 9", with 48 pages plus a few of advertising at the end. Both are in fair shape with wear and staining to the covers. The spines are still attached and the pages, while stained, are supple and legible. They are both good usable, readable copies that display very well. Together these rare booklets make an outstanding piece of United States and Civil Rights history and an awesome addition to any collection.
