Description: Rare original antique engraving print from an 1860s illustrated journal. This depicts a rally in Union Square Park in New York City for Democratic presidential candidate General George Brinton McClellan. He ran against the incumbent President Abraham Lincoln, and lost. McClellan was nominated by the Democrats to run against Abraham Lincoln in the 1864 U.S. presidential election. McClellan supported continuation of the war and restoration of the Union (but not the abolition of slavery), but the party platform was opposed to this position. The platform called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a negotiated settlement with the Confederacy. McClellan was forced to repudiate the platform, which made his campaign inconsistent and difficult. He also was not helped by the party's choice for vice president, George H. Pendleton, a peace candidate from Ohio. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture fills most of it, measuring about 9 x 13 inches, with a caption below it. The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
