Description: An original manuscript receipt from 1864. It is a receipt for several items purchased by Judge Townsend Haines. I am having a difficult time reading the handwriting, but this was with a collection of similar documents. Judge Townsend Haines studied law in the office of Judge Isaac Darlington, he was admitted to the bar in 1818. He was active in politics, a member of the Whig party and in 1838 he edited a political journal which was conducted in the interest of that party. He took an active role in the President campaign of 1844. In 1848 he was appointed Secretary of State by Governor Johnston and continued to practice law in the courts of Chester County. President Taylor appointed him to be the Register of United States Treasury in 1850, where he served for eighteen months. 6 1/2" x 5 1/4" The document has some minor discoloration, a few horizontal crease from folding, else in very good condition.
