Description: Radway’s Ready Relief was introduced in 1847 as a liniment for external and internal pain. During the American Civil War, the company published this almanac, which had a copy of the Constitution (starts on page 21) as well as the standard moon phases, articles on health and, in the case, testimonials from various members of the army praising the qualities of Dr. Radway’s medicine. This particular example has some interesting marginalia that appears to be an attempt at record-keeping as the penciled notations are across various dates (see photos). Some chipped edges and soiling. Great little example of an attempt to keep spirits up and promote patriotism during the war. Classic of its kind, quite rare and highly entertaining. Good Condition: 8vo: yellow paper pamphlet with black lettering: chipped edges with some small tears: dog-eared at top right corner: foxing: pencil on cover, lengthwise, and illegible: occasional notation inside on almanac page in pencil: pencil on rear cover: 32 pages plus cover: light soiling on cover and inside due to handling: “We Study to Prolong Life: Dr. Radway’s Constitutional Almanac for 1862, for the use of Farmers, Clergymen, Statesmen, Lawyers, Mechanics, Merchants, Physicians, Mariners, Soldiers, and Others Containing Important Facts for the Consideration of the Sick and Those Who stuffer Pain Pointing out the Sure Means of Prevention and Cure of Disease by Dr. Radway’s Ready Relief, Regulating Pills, and Renovating Resolvent; with Certificates of Cure. also, the Constitution of the United States of America”: Dr. Radway: New York: Radway and Company: 1862RAREP1862ADEAPam-0516
