An Incredible letter from a student, crew member and Captains Clerk on board "Old Ironside" during the Civil War. The letter reads in full: "U.S.S. Constitution, Newport RI (October 2nd 1862) My Dear Sir I received your hasty note of the 29ths and will answer it immediately, although an answer at this late period will hardly be of any avail. The admittance to to academy of one who is so well versed as you probably are, in the fundamental rules of education, is certainly sure. That is, if you secure your appointment in time, which I hope you will. The examination consists of the four notes of arithmetic, addition , subtraction, multiplication & division, also dividing by factors which you had better look at, also spelling upon which they are very severe, this is the sum and substance of it. In regards to age of admittance is from fourteen to eighteen. But it is time for me to close if I wish this to go by the next mail, for which you must excuse me, hoping that I soon shall have the pleasure of shaking hands with you on board the Constitution. Let me remain, Yours Truly, L.G. Spalding " WHEN ANNAPOLIS MOVED TO NEWPORT, RI The United States Naval Academy is and was located in Annapolis, Md., and that posed a problem with the advent of the Civil War in 1861. Maryland, a border state with many Southern sympathizers, was plausibly within striking distance of Confederate forces. To protect and continue the Naval Academy, the U.S. Navy moved it from Annapolis to Newport, R.I., for the duration of the Civil War. Though the Naval Academy only spent four years in Newport, its presence would have a lasting impact on the city. One of the academy’s instructors noted the advantages of Narragansett Bay while there, and he later established the Naval War College in Newport. Capt. George S. Blake, the Academy’s superintendent, made the decision to move the Naval Academy to a northern site. Not only did he have concerns about the safety of his staff and officer candidates, he knew the Academy’s training ship was a tempting target for the Confederates. For the Naval Academy had been using as a training vessel the most famous ship in the Navy – Old Ironsides, the U.S.S. Constitution.
