As a surveyor and farmer, he enlisted in the army at the beginning of the Civil War and joined the 46th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant and before his unit went to the front received the commission of Major. Promoted Colonel and commander of the regiment on October 11, 1862, he participated in the Battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg, suffering severe wounds during the first day at Shiloh.
