Robert Winthrop was a prominent Massachusetts politician in the mid-19th century serving as the Speaker of the House of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1838-1840. He was elected the U.S. House of Representatives in 1840 and served as the Speaker of the House from 1847-1849. He also served an appointment term in the U.S. Senate. A law student of Daniel Webster and a descendent of famous Puritan leader John Winthrop, Robert's great contributions came in works of history and membership to the American Antiquarian Society.
