Description: This 1856 John C. Fremont Presidential Campaign medal (DeWitt/Sullivan-JF 1856-12; brass, 27.3 mm.) has great eye appeal with a nice strike and great color and surfaces. Some luster remains on its surface. Obverse: Nearly full-face civilian bust of Fremont, to quarter left, with legend: “COL. JOHN. C. FREMONT.” above, and “JESSIE’S. CHOICE.” below. Reverse: Heraldic displayed eagle, with olive branch in right talon and three arrow in left talon, with legend: “FREMONT & DAYTON.” above, and “* THE PEOPLES CHOICE. *” below. Upright milled edge ||||||. The “Jessie” referred to on the obverse was Fremont’s popular wife, the former Jessie Benton, whom he married in 1841. She was the daughter of Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton, who, as a Democratic Party leader in the Senate for more than thirty years, championed the expansionist movement, which became known as Manifest Destiny. Through Benton’s power and influence, he obtained for Fremont the position of leading expeditions of the Oregon Trail, the Oregon Territory, the Great Basin, and Sierra Mountains to California from 1842 to 1846.
