Lacks one engraved plate. Spine backing is defective. Boards sunned around the edges, with some marking, and with quite heavy wear to edges and corners. Inner hinges reinforced. Frontispiece trimmed (without loss of illustrated area) and age-toned. Engraved title page also trimmed and detached. Some age-toning and edgewear to letterpress title page. Occasional wear to edges of text pages, with a few short closed tears and corner chips. Minor offsetting from plates to text. One further plate lightly trimmed and another with a short closed tear. This is the first edition in English, translated from the original German.⁂ Marenholtz-Bulow first met Fröbel in 1850, and became a disciple of his ideas, devoting her life to founding kindergartens in Germany and many other European countries. This first English translation was intended to spread the concept of kindergartens in England and America. This copy bears the label of the library of the Historial Department of the Children's Building at the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. key words:
