First edition. Here we have a comprehensive collection of proverbs which J Ray originally identified as being "a short sentence or phrase in common use, containing some trope, figure, homonymy, rhyme, or other novity of expression". Henry Bohn went on to expand the collection and revise and extent the Index.Dark blue cloth boards with a blind stamped decorative design. Minor marks and a little wear to the corners. Gilt lettering and blind stamped decoration on the spine. Minor fraying to top and bottom of the spine. Publisher's catalogue on endpapers with bookplate, name stamp, and name of previous owner on the front endpapers. Remains of newspaper cutting on the frontispiece. Minor marks to some pages. Both hinges partially cracked but all pages are firm and the book is in very good condition.
