Description: I have here for sale the classic 6 volume set entitled A HISTORY OF BRITISH BIRDS by the Rev F O Morris, Vols I-VI. First edition set published by Groombridge & Sons, London from 1851 through to 1857. Each volume covers a certain number of species of bird and a number of beautiful colour plates of birds - Vol I - 60 plates, Vol II - 60 plates; Vol III - 59 plates; Vol IV - 62 plates; Vol V - 57 plates and Vol VI - 60 plates, so altogether there are 358 colour plates.Francis Orpen Morris (25 March 1810 – 10 February 1893) was an Anglo-Irish clergyman, notable as "parson-naturalist" (ornithologist and entomologist) and as the author of many children's books and books on natural history and heritage buildings. He was a pioneer of the movement to protect birds from the plume trade and was a co-founder of the Plumage League. This set A History of British Birds was a bestseller and was originally published from June 1850 in monthly parts over a period of some seven years. Each folio consisted of text and four hand-coloured plates. This is a bind-up of all those issues.Bound in half brown leather on brown cloth hardboards. Gilt border between the two. 5 gilt raised bands and gilt lettering to the spines. All are scuffed to the raised bands, corners and joints. Cloth is partially split to the front joints of Vols IV and VI. All boards firm. Marbled endpapers. Gilt page edges. One detached plate in Vol II. Vol II and III have had their spine info switched. A few foxing spots here and there. Condition overall: very good. Vol I - 364 pages of text; Vol II - 360 pages; Vol III - 391 pages; Vol IV - 330 pages; Vol V - 315 pages; Vol VI - 290 pages. 25 x 16 cm.
