Description: RARE FIRST EDITION IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. Fully titled and subtitled, The Lamp of Lothian; or the History of Haddington, in connection with the public affairs of East Lothian and of Scotland, from the Earliest Records to the Present Period. Authored by James Miller, FIRST EDITION published by Haddington; James Allan, for sale by Oliver and Boyd, Edinburgh. The brown cloth boards have been repaired, cleaned and sealed. The boards are textured with embossed front and rear board decoration, clear gilt spine titling. Original endpapers with a nice gift inscription on first free endpaper dated 1848. There is an illustration on the title page, no further illustrations in 528 clean and very solidly bound pages. A rare foxing mark or two, a single ink marking seen (see listing photo), some darkening of the several final pages of the book. There is only one other copy of this First Edition found online, and it is in poor condition. The more common older version is the 1900 reprint. The town of Haddington is located on the border between England and Scotland, which provides a compelling backdrop for the book. Haddington's historic core is known for its relatively unaltered medieval plan and many surviving historic buildings. Here is an overview of the book from a listing of the modern reprint: "This book chronicles the events that shaped Haddington, a Scottish town situated on tumultuous grounds, making it prone to centuries of border skirmishes and foreign occupations. The author provides a detailed account of the town's history, from its origins in the 12th century to the 16th century, when Haddington became embroiled in the Anglo-Scottish wars. The book delves into the intricacies of Scottish history, providing insights into the power struggles, religious conflicts, and political alliances that shaped the nation's destiny during the Middle Ages. Through the lens of Haddington's experiences, the author explores broader themes of medieval warfare, the role of the Church, and the resilience of communities in the face of adversity. The book's meticulous research and vivid storytelling make it an engaging read for anyone interested in Scottish history or the complexities of medieval life." B52
