This is one of several book he wrote on mesmerism also known as animal magnetism. Animal magnetism was a protoscientific theory developed by a Vienna-trained German doctor Franz Mesmer in the 18th century. Mesmer claimed that all living things, including humans, animals and vegetables posses this natural force. This “force” could have physical effects, including healing. Edgar Allen Poe wrote a book called The Philosophy of Animal Magnetism in 1837 on the offshoot topic. He made reference to mesmerism and used some of its ideas for Eureka. Mesmerism likely appealed to Poe due its emphasis on the psychic phenomena and its alleged release of the soul from the body. RAREB1843DMOJ - 01/23COLN1843DMOJ - 10/24 - HKREV134
