The second edition of this work. 'Pericles and Aspasia' describes the development of Aspasia's romance with pericles, the work being told in a series of letters to her friend, Cleone. Aspasia was an immigrant to Athens in the classical era, who was the lover and partner of Pericles, a statesman. Pericles died in the Peloponnesian War. Their house in Athens was supposed to be an intellectual centre, being visited by prominent writers and thinkers of the time. Aspasia has also sometimes been credited with influencing Socrates. This work has generally been considered Landor's best. Walter Savage Landor was a writer who is best known for 'Imaginary Conversations'. In a signed binding by T. M. Bromace. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Humphry and Mary Ward'. CONDITION In a signed quarter morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the boards. Some light marks to the spines. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with only the occasional light spot.
