Description: This is an old New York Circuit Court document, dated September 5, 1838. It is concerned with a case from Rensselaer County. The judge in this case was John P. Cushman (1784-1848), who also served in Congress as a member of the Federalist Party. The case involved two men, Alvan Goodrichand Moses Cleveland. The first man was probably the same Alvan Goodrich who was born in 1790, died in 1852,and who was born in, and later died in, Washington County, New York. Washington County is directly adjacent to Rensselaer County. This document is partly printed and partly handwritten. It was written and signed by a court clerk named Henry R. Bristol. This man might be the same Henry R. Bristol who was born in 1797, died in 1855, and who is buried in Pittsford Cemetery, in Monroe County, New York. One of the attorneys in one of these cases is J. H. Boyd. I believe that this man was John Huggins Boyd (1799-1868). Boyd practiced law in Salem and Whitehall, New York. He was justice of the peace for Whitehall, a member of the New York State Assembly in 1840, and supervisor of Whitehall in the late 1840s. In 1851, he was elected as to the United States House of Representatives. After his term, he was president of the Whitehall village, special surrogate of Washington County, and practiced law until his death at the age of 68. The document is about 13" by 8". It is in good condition, with creases where it has been folded, light browning, and some general wear. Shipping is FREE within the USA. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
