Description: "The Library of American Biography," Vol, VII, conducted by Jared Sparks, published by Hilliard, Gray and Co. in Boston and Richard James Kennett in London, 1837, 402 pages, maroon cloth hardcover, gilt titling on spine, 7.25" by 5". Rare volume from this important early series of biographies of notable Americans, this volumes focusing on four luminaries: Sir William Phils, Lucretia Maria Davidson, Israel Putnam, and David Rittenhouse. Especially valuable for the rare material on Plattsburgh, New York teenage poet Lucretia Maria Davidson, who tragically died at 16, here memorialized with several previously unpublished poems. Fascinating. Interior with light spotting throughout though more prominent to the front endpaper, which includes a library bookplate identifying the book as belonging to the library of Frederic Lewis Gay, a Boston antiquarian and historian. Penciled name of previous owner, Josiah Quincy of Cambridge, in front, an early mayor of Boston. General rubbing and fading to boards, chipping to head and foot of spine. Binding solid.
