Description: Fully titled, THE ESSAYS OR COUNSELS CIVIL AND MORAL AND WISDOM OF THE ANCIENTS OF FRANCIS LORD VERULAM. Edited by B. Montague, Esq., published in 1938 by William Pickering, London, FULL LEATHER, in VERY GOOD CONDITION. This book by Francis Bacon, also known as Lord Verulam, is a collection of short, reflective essays that offer insightful observations on a wide range of human behaviors, moral dilemmas, political issues, and personal conduct, exploring topics like truth, death, adversity, friendship, marriage, and the nature of power, all presented with a keen eye for detail and a focus on practical wisdom; essentially, it serves as a guide for navigating life's complexities through thoughtful analysis and balanced perspectives. First published in 1597, this version was published in 1836. It was owned by Frederick Leveson Gower, and HAS HIS BOOKPLATE BEHIND THE FRONT BOARD AND HE ALSO SIGNED HIS NAME ON THE TOP OF THE TITLE PAGE. The signature reads, F Leverson Gower. It is possible that this is the autograph of, Hon. Edward Frederick Leveson-Gower. I say this because I was able to find an example of this individual's signature on eBay and included a photo showing this autograph. It seem generally consistent, right slanting script and in particular, the "G" in Gower in both signatures is consistent. Here is the bio of Hon Edward Frederick Leveson-Gower from Wikipedia: "Hon. Edward Frederick Leveson-Gower DL, JP (3 May 1819 – 30 May 1907), commonly known as Freddy Leveson, was a British barrister, Liberal politician, and aristocrat from the Leveson-Gower family." I am unable to find the bookplate itself online. The book is in VERY GOOD CONDITION. Clean leather, five raised bands on the spine, the "B" in Bacon's on the spine title is rubbed. Board edges are very light. The binding is solid, and is being reinforced with binding tape front and back endpapers (see front endpapers as an example. Gilt on three page edges, 351 clean and solidly bound pages, with no marks other than the signature on the title page, and there is an additional pencil or ink of the name, "Leveson", on the first free endpaper.
