First edition, royal octavo (large paper) issue (with India-proof plates laid down on thick paper stock, tissue guarded, as well as India-proofs of the in-text woodcuts). xii, 280, [4, publishers ads] pp. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece, title page with engraved vignette, and 19 further full page steel engraved plates (all 21 engravings present as per plate list at front), all after sketches by David Roberts, various engravers. Plates dated 'Oct. 28, 1835.'. Also illustrated with 10 woodcuts, in the text, with additional proof sheets on India paper bound-in opposite. Green full crushed morocco binding, with blind stamped borders. All text block edges gilt. Five gilt ruled bands, and gilt lettering to spine. Gilt ruled borders to inside of covers. Contemporary small binders label: 'F. Westley, Binder, Friar Street, near Doctors Commons'. Size: large (royal) 8vo (24.5cm x 16.4cm).Good overall condition. A few plates quite heavily foxed, and we have shown a couple examples of these in the gallery. Binding rubbed and with some scuffing, more so along edges of spine and corners. Boards lightly marked. A little scattered mainly light foxing to title page and a few text leaves, but most pages bright and unaffected. Plates rather more foxed, light in general to the engraved side of the sheets, and mainly restricted to the edges of the mount, though a handful of engravings with foxing with the plate area itself. Blank sides of many plates with moderate foxing. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely.A scarce example of the large paper issue of 'The tourist in Spain. Andalusia.', which forms part of Jennings' Landscape Annual series, and contains 21 steel engraved views (inc. f/piece and t/page vignette) after sketches by highly regarded Scottish artist David Roberts. The India-proof plates are laid down on thick paper stock and are faced with tissue guards, and the highly evocative text is by Thomas Roscoe. In addition, there are 10 woodcuts in the text, each of which for this large paper 'Royal Octavo' issue are repeated on sheets of India paper opposite.Though best known for his lithographic prints of Egypt and the Near East from a tour in the late 1830s, Roberts' first foray into foreign travel and sketching for book illustrations began several years earlier. In 1832 he traveled in Spain and Tangiers, returning at the end of 1833 with a supply of sketches that he elaborated into attractive and popular paintings, and many of which were also published as steel engravings in the Spanish series (which included Portugal and Morocco) of Jennings' Landscape Annual. These beautifully illustrated annuals proved very popular, and soon occupied the shelves of countless country house libraries around the British Isles. The bulk of the annuals were published in standard 8vo, with just a handful of each edition produced in this Royal Octavo format with India-proof engravings. According to the publisher's advertisement in the 1836 annual, this luxury 'Royal Octavo' issue was priced at £2 12 6 [approx. £370 today].
