The first edition of this work. In thirteen volumes, being four volumes of Series I, five volumes of Series II, and four volumes of Series III. Complete as thirteen volumes, though three supplemental volumes were published, titled 'Fin des Livairsons Complementaires' and 'Annees 1835-1836'. A directory of the cause celebre throughout French history up to the mid nineteenth century. Each incident arouse widespread controversy, and heated public debate. This work provides a comprehensive description of all of the penal legislation and criminal cases of France throughout history. The work offers a fascinating insight into French history, both social and the legal history of the country, seeing how the country developed over time in terms of their legal proceedings. One of the most prominent and famous cases discussed in this work is the 1790s trial against Marie Antoinette, a trial that was the result of the French Revolution and ended in her execution. The author also discusses Louis XVI and Madame du Barry. Written by Edme-Theodore Bourg under the pseudonym B. Saint-Edme, who was also the author of 'Du Dictionnaire de la Penalite'. Light rubbing to the boards and spines. Loss of some paper to the front board of Series III Volume I. Minor bumping to the extremities. Small amount of loss of leather to the front joint of Series I Volume III. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Light tidemark to the first few pages of Series II Volume I. Puncture marks to the first few pages of Series III Volume II.
