Description: 1833 Hand-Colored Stone Lithograph from Lorenz Oken's Natural History: ALLGEMEINE NATURGESCHICHTE Für alle Stände (CRUCEANS, ARACHNDS, MILLIPEDES...) Taf 11 I'm listing a group of fascinating large, hand-colored folio prints from the monumental work of natural history by the biologist and natural philosopher Lorenz Oken (1779–1851) The title of this work translates roughly to: 'Natural History for All Social Classes', & features these very attractive large plates, often with many related life forms combined into one composition. The work is mostly valued for these wonderful hand-colored prints by master artist of natural history, Johann Susemihl (1767–1847).These are large, intricate, involved & beautiful plates which make wonderful wall-art, with compelling & historic Natural History engravings, illustrating the fascinating graphic forms of these amazing life-forms. Many of this grouping look almost like abstract, biomorphic art in addition to being scientific. The Artist:Johann Conrad Susemihl (1767 Rainrod, Oberhessen – 1847), was a German copperplate engraver and artist noted for his images of natural history, landscapes and architecture. Susemihl is acclaimed for his survey of the birds of Germany, Teutsche Ornithologie in 22 parts between 1800 and 1817, which was produced to rival the sumptuously illustrated books on birds that were being published in Europe at that time, such as those by François Le Vaillant. Susemihl also produced the plates for the seven volume series Allgemeine Naturgeschichte für alle Stände by the German naturalist and mystic, Lorenz Oken (the present work), and published in Stuttgart by Hoffman between 1839 and 1841. The Volumes:The General Natural History for All Classes is a monumental work of natural history by the biologist and natural philosopher Lorenz Oken (1779–1851), which contains virtually the entire scientific and natural philosophical oeuvre of this most important representative of Schelling's natural philosophical teachings. The thirteen volumes of Allgemeine Naturgeschichte were published in the years 1833 to 1841 in the Hoffmannsche Verlagsbuchhandlung in Stuttgart and supplemented in the following two years by an illustrated atlas and a universal index. The Plates:Every part of these prints was made by hand: Hand drawn & engraved on Copper which was hand-mined, smelted & rolled, transferred to lithographic stones through an involved process which harvests the fine details that engraving on copper offers, the printing benefits of the lithographic process. They were printed individually onto handmade cotton rag paper, inked & colored with hand-ground pigments individually by hand, & they were usually hand sewn into handmade leather-bound books. Condition:Appears to be in excellent condition for a nearly 200-year-old engraving. The hand-coloring appears to remain sharp & brilliant as the day it was painted. Very little age-toning for a print this old, some antique character as expected from its life as a bookplate. A clean print as these go, printed on thick, creamy wove paper. Please peruse the detailed photos. These prints are very old & may have minor imperfections expected with age, such as some typical age-toning of the paper, oxidation of the old original watercolors, spots, text-offsetting, artifacts from having been bound into a book, etc. Please examine the photos & details carefully.Text Page(s): This one comes without original text page. I've added a scan of a sample cover page from one of the volumes to the listing photos for reference, it's not part of the listing. About These Gorgeous Creatures:This plate from the supplemental series features Crustaceans, Crabs, Shrimps & Spiders, & also apparently millipedes. A veritable Noah's Ark of fascinating multi-legged critters in lovely colors...Size: 13-1/2" x 11" approximately.Shipping: Multiple prints combine into one USPS Flat-Rate envelope.
