Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique map "The Environs of London. Reduced from the Ordnance Survey.". DATE PRINTED: 1833, dated on the map. SIZE: The printed area of the map is approximately 51.5 x 34 cm, 20.25 x 13.5 inches (large) plus margins and titles. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Joshua Archer. Archer (b. circa 1792) was a copperplate printer, cartographer and a prolific engraver who executed a number of county maps between 1833 and 1847: in the 1830s he produced these unusual maps for William Pinnock; most of the maps for the British Magazine (1841-1844); maps for Thomas Dugdale’s Curiosities of Great Britain; and the early maps for Henry Fisher. PROVENANCE: Published in Pinnock's Guide to Knowledge. Pinnock's Guide to Knowledge was a serialised partwork which included county and other maps, published by William Pinnock (1782–1843). A distinctive woodblock engraved map where the printing is reversed - white on black. The maps, engraved mostly by Joshua Archer and Sidney Hall, were cut into a wood block and printed directly so that they appeared white on black. The maps re-appeared in a very rare 1838 re-issue in which the imprint was modified to the new printer, R. Clay. Rare lithographic issues followed in the more normal black on white format through to 1863 by Shepherd & Sutton and lastly by Thomas Johnson. TYPE: Antique wood block engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian maps and prints are subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated. Several folds on the back have been re-enforced with a few small holes resulting which are visible when held up to the light.AUTHENTICITY: This is an authentic antique print, published at the date stated above. I do not offer reproductions. It is not a modern copy. The term 'original' when applied to a print means that it was printed at the first or original date of publication; it does not imply that the item is unique.
