ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by William Radclyffe after a picture by Thomas H. Shepherd. Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1792–1864) was a topographical watercolour artist well known for his architectural paintings. PROVENANCE: Published in 'Modern Athens, displayed in a series of views; or, Edinburgh in the nineteenth century; exhibiting the whole of the new buildings, modern improvements, antiquities, & picturesque scenery of the Scottish metropolis & its environs, from original drawings by Mr. T. Hermitage House was built in 1785 and designed by the architect William Burn. Blackford is a residential area in the south of Edinburgh. It is a popular area for outdoor recreation. Blackford Hill provides spectacular views over the city and beyond. The Hermitage of Braid, immediately behind Blackford Hill, also offers a peaceful and picturesque location for walking. Blackford Avenue forms part of an historic route from the city to Jordan Burn which runs through Blackford on its way to join the Braid Burn close to Cameron Toll.
