Ritson was known for the accuracy of his translations of the manuscripts he handled, which included many old songs, fairy tales and ballads which had not yet been widely published.To volume I are the annals of the Caledonians and Picts, and to volume II the annals of the Scots, and sections on such locations as Strathclyde, Cumberland and Galloway. This work features passages in Latin alongside their English translation.With armorial bookplates to the front and rear pastedowns of each volume. Bookplates to the front pastedowns have names removed, however the bookplates to the rear bears the name of contemporary owner William Lockyer Merewether. A Major General, Merewether was a British Army officer who served in both India and Abyssinia. CONDITION In the original half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Bumping to extremities, and rubbing to the calf portion. Some discolouration to spine. Armorial bookplates to front and rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
