Together with William Daniell's slightly earlier Tour of the Coast of Britain, it forms a wonderful record of the state of the Country in the 1820s, in this case of the whole of the southern coast from Whitstable to Lands End and North Devon and on to Somersetshire. 80 engravings in total, the majority by Turner, with others by Samuel Prout, W. Collins, L. Clennell, S. Owen, E. Blore, P. Dewint, J. Hakewill, W. Harwell, H. Edridge, L. Francia, W. Alexander, and W. Westall. Superbly produced by W.B. Cooke, in leather and marbled paper bindings. With the bookplate of a previous owner, W. Gott. Probably William Gott (1797 - 1863), industrialist, and book and art collector based in Leeds. Now scarce, most copies having been broken for the plates. Size: the covers measure approx. 39cms x 28cms. Unpaginated, but each plate is accompanied by a detailed description.Condition: The pair are in a good condition. The leather a little scuffed, but very acceptable with good gilt titles. Inside is generally clean, with mild foxing occasionally. Bookplate of William Gott on both front endpapers. Neat pencil annotations to the Contents pages (see photo). Tissue guards present.
