1826 Blackwood's 1st Years of the Monthly, Africa Map of The Niger, New Fiction

Description: This is a now rare January 1826 number, complete, of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. An "acceptable" copy that has some creases here and there and scattered ancient stains, none of which affect the text for reading purposes. This one neatly removed by me a few days ago from an old damaged bound volume of the monthly. See photos for complete contents. 104 pages. Highlights I find here include: An opening, rather crude, very early map of Africa headed "The Niger [River] & Its Tributary Streams." This is an item of some interest as I lived along the Niger River 50 years ago and the map is a very early example of what can be called, at this date, a good deal of guesswork, including the early names of places that have long vanished or evolved into a new nomenclature in the last 200 years. See photo. A 30 page "Preface" by the principal editors (Wilson, Maginn, etc.) of the monthly detailing the history, so far has it had reached, of the publication of the Edinburgh magazine. The opening chapters of G.R. Gleig's serialized novel The Country Curate. Gleig, who would contribute to the magazine over many years, was much later to become the Chaplain General of the English Royal Armed Forces. The novel was not published in book form (In both England & America) until 1830. Thomas Hamilton's "Matilda; A Tale of the Day." Editor John Wilson on the Christmas literary albums of the year 1825. Other items of interest here include the announcement of the "preparation for publication" of what would become future classic literary works. These include: Gabriel Rossetti's (father to painter and poet Dante) 6-volume Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri; a new [science fiction] novel by Mrs. Mary Shelley, "The Last Man"; Walter Scott's Woodstock: a Tale of the Long Parliament; the first number of Bolster's Quarterly Magazine, "the only literary journal in Ireland"; and, James Fenimore Cooper's (author of "The Pilot") The Last of the Mohicans.
