Charles Caleb Colton (1780–1832) was an English cleric, writer and collector, well known for his eccentricities. Colton left England in 1828, possibly fleeing from his creditors, and for two years Colton traveled throughout the United States, then established a residence in Paris. Colton's books, including collections of epigrammatic aphorisms and short essays on conduct, were extremely popular in his day. Toward the end of 1820, Colton published the first part of this work -- Lacon, or Many Things in Few Words To Those Who Think, in a small edition. It was very successful and immediately went through five additional printings. Some Excerpts from the books: 'The excesses of our youth, are drafts upon our old age, payable with interest, about thirty years after date.' 'It is only when the rich are sick, that they fully feel the impotence of wealth.' 'The keenest abuse of our enemies will not hurt us so much in the estimation of the discerning, as the injudiciuos praise of our friends.' . The books are bound in brown leather with leather tips. The covers have marbelized design. Covers firmly attached with no cracking of hinges. Pages are clean and tightly bound with just a touch of spotting to a few textual pages. Binding shows some corner and edge wear. Previous owner name and date written on first blank page (George Paulter, London, 1892). Books remain in very good condition. A nice set and a rare printing! This set would be a terrific addition to a collection. Great gift idea! (Inventory: Box 18A) Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
