Friedrich Ludewig Bouterwek (15 April 1766 - 9 August 1828) was a German philosopher and critic, born to a mining director at Oker, Electorate of Saxony, now a district of Goslar in Lower Saxony. Bouterwek studied law and philology under Christian Gottlob Heyne and Johann Georg Heinrich Federal at the University of Gottingen, and later became a professor ordinarius of philosophy at Gottingen. His History of Spanish and Portuguese Literature was originally part of a larger, 12 volume set (Geschichte der neuern Poesie und Beredsamkeit), but has been published separately in French, Spanish, and English.
