New endpapers.Very good condition except missing part of the upper margin of the title pageAn eyewitness account of a shipwreck and the adventurous aftermarth by an accomplished writer: this gives the work an authenticity and vividness that is sometimes lacking in the third party or 'ghost-written' narratives. Buchan's observations of the place and people are particularly illuminating. Despite this rather shaky start (he was 17/18 at the time of the shipwreck), Buchan went on to have quite an illustrious career India, before 'retiring' to his estate in Berwickshire.Having put in at False Bay, allowing the passengers to visit Cape Town, the Winterton ran aground on rocks some six miles from Madagascar in calm weather. She was subsequently lost during the ensuing storm, and the survivors were marooned on Madagascar for some time before being able to reach Mozambique. From thence they sailed for Bombay but were captured by French pirates and taken to Mauritius where they were detained for a short time before being allowed to proceed to Madras which they finally reached on 16th January, 1794 some twenty-one months after leaving England. =========================================With the bookplate of Charles Fleischmann III.
