1816 Hints Addressed to Proprietors of Orchards and to Growers of Fruit . . .

Description: “Hints Addressed to Proprietors of Orchards and to Growers of Fruit in General”, 1816, by botanist William Salisbury. Ex-Cornell University Library. From the title page: “Comprising Observations of the Apple Trees, In the Cider Countries, Made in a Tour During in the Last Summer. Also, the Natural History of the Aphis Lanata or American Blight and Other Insects Destructive to Fruit Trees.” “London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, Paternoster-Rowe. And sold by the author at Botanic Garden, Sloane-Street.” Hardcover. Impressed in spine in gilt: “Salisbury Orchards 1816” and at bottom of spine also in gilt: “Cornell University Library”. Pages: 1-188 and i-xviii plus the two folding plates. Page Edge treatment: Lightly speckled. Subject contents are shown in accompanying photos. The two folding plates, I and II, showing engravings of insects are intact with no tears or holes or repairs. There are some light damp stains and light browning. There is a name handwritten in period in ink script on the title page. Perhaps a former owner? Many pages have light foxing. A few have a corner fold, a wrinkle or a tiny hole. Beginning at page 17 and continuing through to the last pages, there is brown staining on the page bottoms that varies from light staining to fairly dark and goes from just a small amount in the bottom margin to up to a third of the page on pages from 142 to 174. See accompanying photo for an example of the worst of the staining. The interior front hinge shows a bit of cracking but it is not broken. Both covers are securely attached to the book. The cover corners show wear and are well bumped. Some wear to top and bottom of spine. There is a card attached to the inside of the back cover that is dated Sep. 1898. It has old notes on the inner side of the card. Stamped on the back of the title page is: “Withdrawn Arthur R. Mann Library”. Despite the flaws described above, it is quite an attractively bound and overall decent condition antique book that is difficult to find and especially hard to find in as good condition as this one is. While I have read only a few pages in the Preface, I found the author’s writing style to be very entertaining! He begins thusly: “I know of no character in private life that I hold more contemptible than the man who indulges himself in finding out faults with which he takes pleasure in taunting his neighbors, and little more do I esteem those who publish the errors of others, merely for the purpose of shewing to the world, that they can ride through a country with their eyes open.” And he goes on. I was charmed! Please examine the photos closely & purchase based on your own judgement as to condition & value. This item is inventory #9959.
