Description: 1816 George III Silver 6d - “Bender” Love Token - see description (E703) “There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile, He found a crooked sixpence against the crooked style; He bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse, And they all live together in a little crooked house” The crooked sixpence mentioned in this nursery rhyme is a direct reference to this Love Token. Back in the day, a man would prove his love to a woman by bending a coin in front of her (although I do wonder about this because it’s really, REALLY hard to bend a coin!) and giving it to her. Whether she kept the love token or threw it into the nearest field (which is what happened with this one because it’s a metal detecting find!) showed how she felt.
