Bound in early full leather with spines tooled in gilt and with black and red leather title and volume labels on the spines. The boards are ruled in blind. General rubbing and wear to the bindings. The hinges are a little rubbed but are sound. Corners bumped. Bindings sturdy. Front flyleaves plain. Rear flyleaves marbled. Text shows sporadic foxing. This is NOT an illustrated work. Charles Riviere Dufresny (1648-1724) was a French playwright from Paris. His grandfather was supposed to have been an illegitimate son of Henry IV. Dufresny's plays were not known for high theatre, but they are full of wit and pithy sayings. He was not a wealthy man, as his lifestyle precluded responsible habits. It was said that his second marriage, to a washerwoman, was in service of discharging a debt.
