Description: 1809 O.114a R5- Capped Bust half dollar, PCGS XF40. Note that this is Die State 114.4, as described by the very informative, new BHNC publication, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836" (which is available from us exclusively, either here on ebay or on our website). This one probably grades a few points higher in truth, with many third party grading services not fully understanding how every 1809 O.114a was struck. They are all at least a little weak at Liberty's chin and top of left wing. All. Of. Them. This example is better struck than many, but even it appears weak at upper left wing. In our humble opinion, the luster and details argue for XF40 being the Lowest Conceivable Grade. A great, fairly budget-friendly-yet-really-nice example of this rare coin, from one of the toughest Overton years of all! Only 1817 and 1827 are tougher, with both being nearly impossible! At least you can complete the 1809's!There are new books on Capped Bust Halves that you should be aware of, and we can supply you with copies of each. Serious collector and researcher Robert Powers has recently published two volumes: "US Half Dollars, 1807 - 1826, Variety Attribution Guide" (Volume 1), and "US Half Dollars, 1827 - 1836, Variety Identification Guide" (Volume 2). Powers' work is not intended to take the place of Overton, but rather to serve as very useful and informative adjuncts to those books. Various shortcuts, tips and a bit of a different way of looking at attribution is what Powers does best, and we find further information - in any form - to be both interesting and helpful.
