Description: As part of a collection of rare books related to the Paris Opera and ballet and dance, we offer here: Joseph Berchoux, LA DANSE, OU LA GUERRE DES DIEUX DE L'OPERA, 2nd edition, corrected and augmented. Paris: Giguet et Michaud, 1808. This is the augmented and corrected SECOND EDITION of a satirical poem showcasing the much-publicized rivalry at the Paris Opera of two male dancers ("the gods of the Opera" referred to in the title): Auguste Vestris and the much younger Louis Duport. In 1789, at the outbreak of the French Revolution, Vestris fled to England. After his return to Paris in 1793, he had to contend with the rising star of Duport. In the process of detailing the resulting rivalry, LA DANSE describes the Opera at the time of Pierre Gardel and Jean Dauberval, who were leading ballet-masters. The poem is divided into six cantos of rhymed couplets, and the books include many pages of explanatory notes. CONDITION: Please see all photos and feel free to ask any copies before bidding. This copy does not contain the frontispiece [pp.i-ii] but collates thus: iii-xviii [including half-title and title page;"Extrait du decret du 19 juillet 1793, concernant les Contrefacteurs'; "Preface"; "Lettre a M. Michaud"; and "Avertissement sur cette seconde edition"], 262 numbered pages. PLEASE SEE OUR "OTHER ITEMS" FOR MANY MORE RELATED TO BALLET, DANCE, OPERA, THEATER, AND THE PERFORMING ARTS.
