Description: A Sermon on Duelling, Preached in the Chapel of Yale College, New-Haven, September 9th, 1804, and in the Old Presbyterian Church, New-York, January 21st, 1805. By Timothy Dwight, D.D. and printed in New York City by Collins, Perkins and Co. 1805, 38 pp, 8 x 5.25”, 8vo, paper pamphlet. In as-is condition, having been affixed and subsequently disbound from a larger volume. Modern binding tape to spine. Text block complete but partially split towards the end. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and rubbing to edges. Extensive marginalia in both old and new hand towards the front, as well as handwritten page numbers from when the pamphlet was part of a larger volume. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce work by Timothy Dwight IV (1752-1817), an American theologian who served as president of Yale University from 1795 until his death. This sermon was delivered several months after the infamous duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, in which Hamilton was killed. A wonderful candidate for restoration and rebinding.
