Containing a frontispiece portrait of Lady Rachel Russell, and a plate of Lord William Russell to the verso of page cxli. Rachel, Lady Russell was an English noblewoman, heiress, and author. Her second husband was William, Lord Russell, who was implicated in the Rye House Plot and later executed. A collection of the many letters she wrote to her husband and other distinguished men was published in 1773. William Russell, Lord Russell, was an English politician. He was a leading member of the Country Party, forerunners of the Whigs, who during the reign of King Charles II, laid the groundwork for opposition in the House of Commons to the accession of an openly Catholic king in Charles's brother James. This copy contains a previous owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown: 'E. Bates'. CONDITION Bound in full calf. Externally, smart. Some rubbing and shelf wear to extremities, and especially to the spine. Spine label is partially torn and may detach with extensive handling. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown. Internally, a few spots to the pages, particularly to the frontispiece page, title page, and plate page, but pages are generally clean.
