Description: Here is a very nice old "love token" made of copper, in quite splendid condition overall, measuring app. 1 & 3/8" across, with a plain edge. This early British piece shows just modest wear, with some minor imperfections and a few edge bimphs nothing overly distracting, and I have not cleaned or altered its appearance in any manner, with five of the pictures having been "enhanced" for clarity. The host coin is an English penny of 1797, and the obverse bears some unusual counterstamps I cannot decipher too well - I am hoping the specialist will know what they are seeing here. That side is dominated by a central, cross-like device composed of four sets of large animals above smaller ones, each grouping of the two separated by short knives. What these animals represent is hard for me to say - the large beast resembles a dog, or perhaps it may be a big cat, while the smaller one may be a fox or something similar. An entire row of these smaller guys encircles about 2/3 of the token. In addition, there is a small name stamped on a side, which I cannot decipher no matter how I try. The reverse has maintained most of its features over the years and appears mostly unaffected by the stamp on the other side, with the exception of a small spot near the center. Very unusual! $80.
