Description: This Thomas Spence’s Series London (Middlesex) copper Thomas Spence/Rouse Britannia Conder halfpenny token, dated 1794 (Dalton & Hamer Middlesex No. 678a; Atkins 512; 30.1 mm.) has great eye appeal with great color and surfaces. Obverse: Bust of Spence to left, with die-sinker’s name: “JAMES” below, and “1794” below die-sinker’s name, the “4” turned backwards, with legend: “T * SPENCE * 7 MONTHS IMPRISON’D FOR HIGH TREASON *”. Reverse: Britannia seated facing right, her right arm resting on her shield, her left hand holding a spear from which a cap of Liberty is falling to the ground, with legend: “ROUSE BRITANNIA!” and two small arrow heads. Plain edge. Produced by Thomas Spence, a reformer who rarely missed an opportunity to attack the politics of the day and spent some time in prison for his efforts. Spence was arrested for high treason on May 29, 1794. The crime consisted of publishing his Pigs Meat; or, Lessons for the Swinish Multitude. He was discharged, without a trial, in December of that year. He was prosecuted again in 1801 for publishing his own work, entitled, The Restorer of Society, which the Government termed a seditious libel. In this token, Spence is calling to the public to wake up and prevent freedom from slipping away.
