Description: Welcome to Earlycoppercoins! I am the owner, Shawn A. Yancey, and I am a member of ANA and Early American Coppers, EAC #4647. I am pleased to offer the following item: From the New Cumberland Collection of 1793-1814 US large cents, complete by Sheldon Variety S-1 through S-295 including several NC varieties! NCC-018: 1793 S-16 Liberty Cap, R6-, NGC VG Details, EAC F12 net G4. From the Adam Mervis collection, sold by Heritage on 01/10/14 as lot #2425, where it was described as: “1793 S-16, B-19 Liberty Cap Cent, VG Details. Second Rarest Sheldon-Numbered 1793 Cap Variety. 1793 1C Liberty Cap -- Edge Damage -- NGC Details. VG. S-16, B-19, R.6. Our EAC Grade Good 4. Ex: Mervis Collection. This piece has the sharpness of VG8 with corroded steel and olive-brown surfaces, showing an obverse edge cut at 12 o'clock. Other surface marks and verdigris are lost in the corrosion. The surface quality prevents a determination of the die state. This cent is unlisted in the Bland and Noyes census lists and ranks about 12th finest known per our EAC grade. The S-16 die marriage is the second rarest Sheldon-numbered 1793 Liberty Cap cent, behind the S-15, and slightly rarer than the S-12. Discovered by Walter Breen in 1956; Ray Chatham (via Richard Picker); Abe Kosoff; Admiral Worthington Bitler; Abe Kosoff; A-Mark (3/1973); Dr. C.R. Chambers; Ennis; Jack Beymer; Fred Borcherdt; Greg Hannigan. From The Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection.” This example is recorded in the Numistudy V6 condition census, where it is coin #62478, graded by Noyes as F12 net G4 Scudzy and tied for CC14-15. I don’t disagree with the detail and sharpness grades, but I do take offense at “Scudzy” because to me this coin still presents itself very well and is in my estimation a “Minus” example. The coin brought $9,987.50 in the Mervis auction from 2014, then was sold again by Heritage in August 2016, where it was lot #3061 and realized $7,050, apparently by CVM. I purchased the coin from CVM on 12/27/16 for the New Cumberland Collection. The coin remains in the Mervis NGC holder and comes with several envelopes and handwritten notes. NGC VG Details Edge Damage Mervis Collection #2038595-016. Prior pedigree outlined in the description above; most recently Shawn A. Yancey #11684 on 12/27/16. Thank you for checking out this item!
