SIZE: The printed area of the view, including titles, is approximately 27 x 21.5 cm, 10.5 x 8.5 inches (medium) plus margins. Many copies were centre folded and mounted, this example has no folds and was originally mounted in full sheet format.ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Published by John Cary. John Cary was a very important English cartographer who published "The New and Correct English Atlas" in 1787 with a reprint in 1793. It was revolutionary in its time. Cary abandoned the elaborate decoration and mythical beasts which adorned earlier maps in favour of a more detailed, accurate and scientific approach. Cary set a standard thereafter which other Cartographers were to follow, most notably, the Ordnance Survey; indeed, the atlas proved so popular, that for the 1809 edition, an entirely new set of maps had to be engraved as the original plates had become so worn!PROVENANCE: This print was published in "The New and Correct English Atlas", 1793.TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper.
